How are the resulting files named?

After the original, with a two-digit part number: a file called report.pdf becomes report-01.pdf, report-02.pdf and so on.

Why is the download a zip?

Because a browser cannot reliably start several downloads at once. A split producing one file hands you that file directly instead.

For a specific set of pages, use Extract pages — it produces one document containing exactly the pages you name.

Each part is a fresh document, so document-level structures such as bookmarks are not carried over.
